We named him Ash
April 6, 2012 by Jeni
Before you read this, let me say just a few things.
I am not writing this for sympathy. I am writing this because I have done so in one form or another for all 3 of my sons. I wrote Brodie a letter that, unfortunately, was lost when I lost everything I had. I wrote Galen’s on a facebook note, because that was before I was at all interested in Twitter. So, this is going in my blog, right here. It’s also being saved to my hard drive, printed out, and put on a backup thumb drive.
Because, really, that’s how I roll.

They are ALL our children
March 26, 2012 by Jeni
Worldwide, children are dying. And, worldwide, people are arguing that they had it coming. This is what our society has turned into. Hate. Envy. Anger. We have no room for love anymore, because we’re only looking out for our own, and we barely sigh when someone else feels pain. When I say “We”, I mean it as a society. We, the human race, are horrible at empathy. We’re too busy looking at what ISN’T being done for us, and we create fears based on what’s not really happening. In turn, we teach this to our children, and it gets amplified. There are a lot of reasons people hate. Religion. Race. Envy. Greed. No one is exempt. Everyone has hated someone or something at one time or another. Some of us have legitimate reasons. It’s completely reasonable to hate someone because they caused you personal harm. But there are a lot of reasons to hate that are completely unreasonable to me.
- Race
- Religion
- Clothing
- Gender
- Sexuality
- Politics
- Opinion
- Music
- Hair color
- Because someone told you to
Let me repeat something. Children are being taught to hate. CHILDREN. The last hope of innocence, the only people on this planet who see everyone for who they really are…are being taught that their innate instincts are wrong.
Who are teaching them this? Paranoid adults.
I don’t want your indoctrination to poison my children. I don’t want your hate to poison my children. But I cannot keep them cooped up with me for their entire lives. They have to see and experience for themselves. The only thing I can do is arm them with knowledge.
To my sons…
It’s not ok to hate someone simply because they’re different from you.
People are going to tell you “We are all God’s Children”. Very few of those people mean it.
No one is ever going to be the same as you. Deal with it.
Skin color is no reason to distrust someone.
Everyone has the potential to be an asshole, just as everyone has the tendency to be an amazing person. It’s your job to give everyone the courtesy of giving them a chance to show you how bright they can shine.
Everyone’s opinions and beliefs are going to be different from yours. You don’t have to agree with them to respect them.
Tolerance doesn’t mean you have to change all of your personal views to suit theirs. It means you accept the other person as they are, and let them live their life.
You and your brothers look very different from each other. You look different from the kids across the street. When you meet someone who has a different skin color from you, remember that they look different from the rest of their race, too, just like you.I sit here, writing this, reading people who I love dearly post hatred on their facebook pages and twitter feeds…and my heart is breaking.
I want so much to write more. But, what will it do?
But, I will say this.
The death of Treyvon Martin hits me in my heart. No, I will never ever know what it’s like to worry that my child will be judged solely based on the color of his skin. But, hear me out for a minute.
In 1997, I lost my sister, her boyfriend, and my cousin in a car accident. One of the things that still angers me to this day is that, while the man who hit their car (we later found out he had a stroke) was shuttled off to a nice hospital to be taken care of, all 4 kids (my sister who drove survived) were drug tested. Let me clarify this: THEY DRUG TESTED THE TEENAGERS BECAUSE THEY WERE TEENAGERS. For all we know, the driver *could* have been drunk.
But we’ll never know.
In these days of social media and information being instant, I have to wonder…if it had happened today, who would voice their unnecessary opinions on my family? I’m sure there were whispers back then. What would they be today? To say that people now are more vicious than they were in 1997 is just wrong. People have been vicious since day 1. The internet has only amplified it.At best, I can offer my condolences to the family of Treyvon. We need to be protecting our children. ALL of our children. From hatred. From violence. From the poison that WE create.

In Which I Rebut an Email from a Family Member…
March 14, 2012 by Jeni
You know what? I had a huge post written out to rebut a family member on some bullshit email about how ebil Obama is.
You know what else? It doesn’t matter what I say. They heard it, so it must be true.
Now, where the hell is Batboy?

late night thoughts…
March 12, 2012 by Jeni
I sit here, marvelling at this little round spot on the front of my belly. I know it’s a butt. It’s perfectly parallel to my pelvis. I feel little feet every once in a while, moving around. I just rubbed my belly and those tiny feet kicked me in response.
Little one, I cannot wait to meet you. To see your perfect little face, that little nose, those tiny feet and hands…I want to introduce you to your brothers, even though you’ll only get to meet one for now. But there is so much more I want you to wait for. We don’t have a home, little one. In less than a week, your daddy will be gone to train for a new job that I hope will be everything we need it to be. It will take daddy far from all of us, but, one day, things will be better.
I will never be able to shelter you from the bad things. This breaks my heart more than you know. I sit here, sobbing, because I don’t know what will happen to us.
But, whatever does happen, Mommy is here. Mommy loves you so very much. You have no idea, little one. My arms cradle you every night, and, when Daddy comes to bed, he drapes his arm around YOU. He is very excited to meet you, too, our beautiful little boy!
I wish things weren’t so hard, and I wish we could welcome you to something so much better. But, we will give you what we have. We have love. We have arms to hold you. We have an infinite amount of kisses for you. And we will do everything we can to make you safe.

You know what else goes “viral”? The Plague.
March 7, 2012 by Jeni
Sometimes, a movement will “go viral”, and it’s a good thing. For instance, when SOPA and PIPA were in the House and Senate waiting to be looked at, the people of the US got together and opposed it, not because they love to steal, but because the rest of the body of those bills were a bridge too far. In the end, the voice of the People was heard to be louder than that of the Hollywood Lobby, and We, The People won.
What is bothering me right now is the Invisible People/Kony 2012 movement.
Why?
Several reasons

I’ve used Birth Control, and I’m NOT a slut
March 3, 2012 by Jeni
It’s funny how those with the loudest voices on this subject right now have no idea what they’re talking about.
The other day, Rush Limbaugh went on the offensive, going on and on about how women who want their insurance companies (that they pay premiums for with their own money) to cover Birth Control without Co-pay are all sluts, and, if what they want is their birth control covered, they should “pay” for it by making sex tapes and putting them online…because, really, who needs birth control other than sluts?
Well, Most women on birth control are ON the hormone therapy (which is what is should be called in the first place. I mean, Viagra is an ED treatment, not Boner Pills) not because they want to have a lot of sex, but because they want to be responsible about their reproductive life. A generous number of which are not even on the medication because of things not even related to reproduction. That’s what this post is about. This is my story.

But, I don’t want to have to share her with you!
February 11, 2012 by Jeni
If your mom was anything like mine, she taught you to share. Share with your friends, share with the kid you think is weird, share with the ginger kid that picks his nose and eats paste, share with your siblings, and share with everyone. So, you grow up sharing your toys with everyone, because, well, otherwise your mom yells at you, then hides your toys in “Toy Prison” or whatever, and you pout and decry sharing with that stupid ginger, because you’re sure that he’s got MEGA cooties, mostly because his finger is always in his damn nose. Only, you said darn, because you were 6, and anything else got your mouth washed out with soap.
Well, you grow up, your life changes. You pick and choose which things to share with others. You keep the purple pens out of your BIC pack for yourself, and share out the shitty green one and the pink ones with everyone else, keeping the blue ones for your best friends. You don’t share so much as a piece of paper with the creepy ginger kid, because, at 14, he still picks his goddamn nose, and you’re pretty sure he still eats paste, just not in public.
